It all began when my daughter Giulia Giaffreda starting kicking a football in the back garden rather than playing with her dolls. She started playing for Sawtry Colts under 8s boys but the following season she and five other girls formed a mixed team to compete in the Hunts league at under 9s. A year later more girls joined the Club and the first under 10s girls team was formed and competed in the S Tech League. The team went from strength to strength - two teams were formed at under 10s and 11s and both had very successful seasons. The current girls set up now has teams representing the Club at five age groups, and a number of the present under 14s team, including Giulia, were there at the outset six years ago. The current team still compete in the Cambs S Tech League and are looking forward to another successful season.
The origins of the Team started back in 2005 when manager Tony Giaffreda assembled a mixed team of girls and boys to compete in the Hunts mini soccer league, Giulia Giaffreda, Alice Bishop and Abi Moss were regular players then and still play for the Club today.
The following season Tony found enough Girls to form the first under 10s Sawtry Colts Girls team and entered it into the Cambs S Tech League. The Team split the following season to form two teams, one staying at under 10s whilst the older girls formed an under 11s team under Norman Tremlett.
From then on Sawtry Colts Girls football grew from strength to strength, each season seeing a new team at each age group, as more girls joined the Club. A football development programme is now in place for the under 6 girls, initiated by Steve Purnell.
The current under 13s Girls have enjoyed some success, getting to the final of the S Tech League Cup in 2007 and finishing in the top four of the league each season. Giulia Giaffreda was the league's leading goal scorer in 2007/08 with 51 goals and amongst the top strikers last season with more than 40 goals.
Most of the current players have been together for three seasons and have developed a great team spirit. Today the team has 11 registered players and are looking forward to competing in the 9 a side version of the game in the S-Tech League and Cup competitions.
